Tackling the Silent and Long "E" Sounds

Second grade North Elementary School students in Ms. Janis Steffan's class learned all about the silent "e" and long "e" this week.

After studying several examples of how the silent and long "e" is used in different words, they watched a video to further understand the different ways the silent and long "e" are used and why.

They saw examples of words using the combination of "ie" and the letter "y," and how such letters can make various "e" sounds.

After the video they listened and followed along as Mrs. Steffan read a set of words with the silent and long "e" in them.

When they came to the challenge section in their phonics book, Ms. Steffan asked the students to circle the words that fit the criteria.

They then had to write out a set of words three times, as well as choose a word from a word bank and place it where it belonged.

The workbook activities helped reinforce what they had just learned.

At the end of the lesson the students partnered up with a classmate and together they had fun rereading through all the their words.
