A Fishy Phonics Lesson

Ms. Madej first had the students practice sounding out the "final e" and they learned how it changes the vowel sound of a word.

The students then took out their phonics workbooks and practiced writing words that all had the "final e" in them.

The second graders had to sound out small, simple words, and then moved on to longer, more complex words.

Ms. Madej showed the students how to take a word apart when sounding it out, making it much easier to learn and comprehend.

The students then had a chance to write a story in their journal. 

Today's assignment was pretending to be "Norman the Fish," writing it from the fish's perspective. 

The story could be about anything they wanted, but they were reminded that it had to be realistic in terms of what a fish could do.

When their stories were finished, they had a chance to sit in Ms. Steffan's chair at the front of the class and read their stories to their classmates.

All of the stories were creative and funny and the students enjoyed sharing their writings with their fellow classmates. 

After the stories were shared, they were given a fish and a bowl to color and tape to their stories.

They hung their stories up on their lockers in the hallway so everyone could have fun reading them.
