The North Elementary School third graders in the Flip the Trip Club had the opportunity to visit Pepper Construction and learn firsthand about all about the exciting changes happening right in their own backyard.

The students began their adventure outside the school where they put on safety vests, safety glasses and hard hats.

After meeting a few of the construction workers, they walked to the site where the school's new addition will be built and listened to the workers describe in detail what the area will look like when it is completed.

The students then went to the construction trailer where the project manager pulled up a 3D rendering of what their school will look like when the construction is done.

The students learned that because the school is so close to the Des Plaines River there are special permits needed to complete the project.

The students asked the workers many questions, particularly about the new rooms that will be built onto the school and what they will be used for.

They learned that their current lunch room will be converted into a new music room, that a new lunch room will be built and that there will be new kindergarten rooms added on to the school to support full day kindergarten next year.

The construction workers showed the students their wall calendar and explained how it helps them keep all of the various projects organized and helps them stay on task.

The student had a blast learning about the work that is happening right outside their classroom window and cannot wait to see what the changes will look like when they return to school next fall.

The Flip the Trip Club is under the direction of Special Education Resource Teacher Ms. Natalie Stevens and Library Media Specialist Ms. Kelley Torres, and meets once a week during lunch to provide students with unique learning opportunities.
