Bringing Portraits to Life

The students were tasked with drawing a portrait of either a fictional character or themselves.

Mr. Lee began the lesson by explaining the importance of using correct proportions for features like ears, shoulders and head.

He then showed the class how to use different types of lines to add patterns and details to their characters, providing each student with a handout full of examples.

The students began their portraits by drawing them with a pencil.

Some students sketched out the basic shapes of their characters to ensure the proportions were correct.

Once the initial drawing was complete, the students were instructed to fill in the empty spaces with different lines and patterns.

When the students were happy with their drawings, they used a black Sharpie to trace over their pencil lines.

After tracing and erasing the pencil marks, they had the option to either add color with markers or leave their portraits as black and white drawings.

The students really enjoyed bringing their characters to life and are excited about the upcoming art projects Mr. Lee has planned for the rest of the year.
