Second Grade Science Stations

North Elementary School second graders had the opportunity to visit five different centers that featured scientific experiences focused on weather, water, plants and soil.

In Ms. Janis Steffan's room students used merge cubes to closely study weather patterns, flowers, water cycles and island diversity.

Merge cubes are foam blocks with unique, scannable patterns that, when viewed through a tablet camera, they can transform into interactive 3D digital objects using augmented reality (AR).

The students were in awe with what they were seeing on their iPads when using the cubes.

They had the ability to zoom in and see up close how different water cycles affect an environment and how a bee lands on a flower and collects the pollen.

One group of students enjoyed looking at a Venus fly trap catch a fly and eat it.

Everything they viewed had a descriptive text to go with it so the students had a good understanding of what it was they were looking at.

In Ms. Stephanie Acuna's room the students had fun painting trees with colors that represented the four seasons, adding flowers and leaves to their trees using Q-tips.

When they moved to Ms. Oluwatimileyin Fasanya's room the students planted seeds in a small cup of soil.

They were careful to fill the cups with only a certain amount of soil so it wouldn't overflow once water was added.

The students were excited to take their cups back to their classrooms to watch the plants grow.

Other stations the students visited that day included Ms. Kayla Novak’s class, where they watched a "Magic School Bus" episode about weather systems and Ms. Danielle Connery’s class where they had fun reading books with a friend.
