A Visit from the DP Fire Department!
This week Des Plaines firefighters came out to North Elementary School in honor of Fire Prevention Week.
The fire inspector gave a presentation on who to call if there is an emergency such as a fire.
He instructed students on the proper way of checking a door handle to see if it is hot before opening it.
A door and a window were set up so students could learn firsthand how to get out of a house if there is a fire.
Another firefighter showed students his gear and how he puts everything on.
He explained the different items that he wears, including his helmet, jacket and oxygen tank.
After the presentation the students went outside to see a fire truck and an ambulance up close.
They learned about the different water controls, hoses and the "jaws of life" tool and what it was used for.
They had fun seeing, hearing and even feeling (from a safe distance) a large fan that is used to push out smoke.
To end the day the students had the chance to take a picture with the firefighters and the truck.
